The time Travelling Con
Hail and well met ThunderGang!
ThunderCon was created to support a community of people that love to immerse themselves in the worlds of fantasy, science and imagination. Over the last five years, ThunderCon has loved bringing generations together to share these worlds. In fact, we have been planning ThunderCon 2020 since; well, right after the last came to close. Little did we know when we last gathered as a community that we could be faced with the uncertainty when we could gather again.
By early this year, not only did ThunderCon 2020 have its venue and organizing committee set, we had guests booked, vendors, exhibitors, sponsors and new programming lined up. We were counting on a tremendous year. Then COVID-19 was officially declared a global pandemic and we were forced to wait and wonder whether we would be allowed to hold the event at all.
After much deliberation and particular attention to federal, provincial and local public health authorities regarding large public gatherings in Ontario, we have come to the decision to not present the ThunderCon event in 2020, but rather postpone the event for 1 year. We are announcing our return to the CLE grounds, Sept. 18/19, 2021 with, guests and exhibitors already confirmed.
This was not an easy decision, but ThunderCon believes it to be the responsible choice. Without a vaccine on the immediate horizon, the risk of COVID-19 breaking out at a mass gathering is simply too great to take. With the health and safety of our community at the forefront of our minds we make this decision now to protect all of us. We are also deciding to reclaim something else we have lost, our certainty. Our certainty that we can continue to deliver the safe, family-friendly event that Thunder Bay has grown to love in 2021.
What we will be doing, today on May the 4th, and throughout 2020 is:
• Extending ThunderCon Memberships through to ThunderCon2021
• Redirecting our resources to support sponsors and exhibitors with appearances, smaller events for promotion
• Delivering ThunderCon programming virtually (panels, videos, downloadable content)
The ThunderCon Board and Operations Team wish everyone safety and health and know that all of you also look forward to a time when we can party like it’s 2021, not 1918. When we can Bring the Thunder and Get our Geek On with fantastic guests and healthy lungs. That is when our passion for pop culture will be able to step in and do its part to heal and inspire. Until then, please stay safe, and remember, no matter how bad it gets, the most comforting certainty is that all this too shall pass.
May the Force be with you.
